I was on brat/hotdog duty for a recent family camping trip and decided to procure our victuals at Karl's. Everything looked so good, and they have a ton of variety that it was not easy to choose what to get. I walked out with some regular and turkey dogs and regular and Packers (cheddar and jalapeno) brats. They were all so delicious, and I can't wait for the next time we need to fire up the grill so we can try some new flavors. While these items don't come cheap, they are well worth it!

There is not a thing here that is not great. I mean, don't go here looking to do your weekly shopping - the grocery is small and the selection limited. But go here for the meat counter. Sure, you can get all the german specialties you can't find elsewhere, housemade sausages and all that good stuff everyone else is going on and on about. But don't overlook the rest of the meat case. One of my favorite things are the various types of stuffed chicken breasts they made. Asparagus, cheese, stuffing, hashbrowns - whatever you'd like rolled up in there for like $3/lb. Throw them in the oven, make a quick side and you have a dinner fit for a king. I love the ease and that it happens to be delicious is just a bonus.

Number one stop when I fly into town. Best assortment of sausages meats. They make a German smile and long for home!
(5)Bill D.
Great summer sausage, brats, liver sausage. I don't go anywhere else for quality meat.

If you love great meats-Karl's is the place for you. They have pretty much any meat you want to slap on your BBQ or on your stove. And the quality is good, we have yet to find a item that has not tasted amazing. This past weekend I used their catering services for a party and once again they hit the ball out if the park! Had the ham and rolls, smoked fish, cheese and sausage tray and pasta salad, everyone at the party raved about how great everything tasted. Also the employees are always there to help with a smile.

Amazing fresh brats! Tried a brat at their brat fry (name doesn't seem to fit since they are freshly grilled out front if the store) and they were perfect! Served on a fresh bakery roll which was excellent!

After years of shopping at Karl's my last two trips were very disappointing. First I went to get a porterhouse cut 3/4". I was told they didn't custom cut meat ? Take what was in the counter. Even Pick n Save will cut a steak. Yesterday we bought their special, 3 rib eye steaks. They looked beautiful, marbled, nice cuts. Made them on the grill, turning only once, and they were so tough and grizzly (it wasn't marbling it was grizzle) had to chew and chew and chew and still had trouble getting them down easily, also no flavor. I returned today to tell them and the counter person made a face like "yuk" then said I might bring the remaining one in and they "might" replace it or just pound with meat tenderizer on it. For 20 # dollars I expected more. So now I have 2 uneatable rib eye steaks. Very disappointing, I won't be returning.

Karls is a great place. Not only for award winning sausage but if you work in the area, they have some great deals for lunch. Generally in the summer, Karls grills out brats and hot dogs and serves them with chips and a soda for around $3 if I recall. This is their first lunch option and it's super quick and easy and very affordable The second lunch option is by going inside the store to the deli where they will custom make you sandwiches, but the best is the hot beef and cheese sandwich with curly fies and a cookie. The package deal is a total steal for how much food you get. I have yet to try a wide variety of meats from karls, but their home made sausages that I have purchased were fantastic and of a good value. Always pleased with my experiences here, and will always refer them to friends or those working in the area for a quick, delicious, affordable lunch.

Neat little market with great local foods. Awesome meat selection! Not the place to go if you are looking for a specific brand or item, because they probably won't have what you are looking for. But if for are looking for some fresh food to put something together for dinner, then check this place out.

I went in with my mom (visiting home) to pick up some fixings for a quick lunch at home. I walked out with one of the best fresh sandwiches I've had in years. I watched as they cut the turkey and pastrami fresh from the breast, layered it with crisp lettuce (that perhaps made the sandwich), and added a bit of spicy mustard. Excellent!
(5)Tony L.
Best sausage around. I'm lucky enough to drive by every day on my way to work so I stop often!
(5)Aaron C.
Best meat in the world!!!!!!!!!!!! I went there just to get some brats and walked out with $100 of meat. Awesome canadian bacon, snack sticks, hungarian, etc.. Everything is top notch. They also have a huge assortment of pates. They also make the best in house sandwiches loaded with delicious, copious amounts of deli meat. Highly recommended...
(5)John K.
The good stuff. If sausage is what you need, you need to go here. It's unclear if they have paint or wall paper on the walls because they are so plastered in awards from sausage competitions. About a dozen kinds of bratwurst alone. Its enough to make you a little giddy when you're inside. They seem to specialize in German sausages, but they spread the love a bit too (yay, kielbasa!). They're more or less a full grocery store as well that focuses on German region food and has a pretty solid cheese selection as well. They have a deli counter for sandwiches too. You can't find something like this in New England. :( But they do ship!

Karl's a fantastic gem of a place. It's one part deli, one part butcher shop (meat market? sausage processor?), and one part convenience store. I use them for so many different, delicious things, and they never fail. #1: Lunch. Karl's offers a variety of sandwiches, made to order, for lunch. They have Friday fish fry options, and a hot lunch option daily. They usually offer delicious fries with each lunch meal, and you always get a cookie! Who doesn't love a cookie in their lunch? On Mondays you get a free soda with your meal. And, being that it is a convenience store, you can choose anything to go with- chips, fruit, soda (Coke OR Pepsi!!! Choices!) and even microwaveable sweet potatoes. Yum. #1.2: Lunch for other people. Being that our office is just around the corner, we often provide Karl's lunches for our customers and guests. They have an easy to use fax menu, with more variety than a sub shop type place. They will even write each person's name on the bag! #2: Meat. Karl's is a world champion sausage maker. Did you even know there was a world series of meat? Well there is. They have their award winning sausage for sale, and I often stop by on my way home to grab some for dinner. It's delicious, fresh, and local. They have a bunch of varieties and flavors, and it comes ground, in sausage format, or cold cuts behind the counter. There is an array of delicious cheese to accompany this. They also sell natural marrow bones. My dog's favorite thing ever, and cheaper than something processed from the pet store. I also hear they take care of your meat after hunting season. Seeing how I'm not a hunter, I can only speculate, but I heard this is true, and has a good reputation. #3: Convenience. As if lunch and fresh meat and dog bones weren't enough, this place is a great little convenience store, selling everything from the basics like soda and chips and frozen meals to Apple Pies in a Bag, fresh fruit and veggies, and delicious German chocolates. I wish I could give Karl's six stars. So great.
(5)Edward B.
My favorite meat market in the area! Great selection of bratwurst, summer sausage, Italian sausage, polish, Slovakian kranske,...you name it and Karl's has it. My summer grilling destination.
(5)Craig G.
OMG - if I die I'm not sure if I want to go to heaven or Karl's Country Market. Just about any cut of meat that was ever made - if they don't have it they will get it for you - they will get standing rib roasts for special dinners or xmas. Pig roasts - yes; my favorite is their summer sausage. When my relatives visit me from California they ask to come along to this store to visit an old fashioned meat market. If you speak German they will take your order that way also.

I've had to edit my review since I first wrote it. I've been back 3 times since and not as happy after finding a few flaws. I was out to dinner a few weeks back and I overheard someone talking about Karl's. They were going on and on about how things aren't fresh. They said that none of the specialty mustards have dates on them and they felt positive that Karl's removes the dates. Also, none of the specialty breads have dates. The next time I went in I checked for myself, first stop, the mustards and sure enough, NONE of them had dates on them. It clearly states on the jar to check the lid for freshness date. Somehow they had all magically disappeared. Almost like someone used a nail polish remover of something to remove the date. Next, the breads. I had needed a rye bread for my dinner and went through them all and none had dates on them. Note this is the area with the German rye breads, not the area with other brands. I bought one of them and got it home and it was soooooooooo stale and sooooooo dry. It crumbled when you picked it up. So, you can make your own opinion. Kind of makes you wonder when this was the same guy who got caught using deer meat in his sausages. If you google Karls country market deer meat, you'll get the info. I sure hope they're not up to their old shenanigans.

my parents met when they worked here in high school, so the least I could do is give this place 5 stars. but seriously this place is the shit. any type of meat you could ever want, absolutely ridiculous selection, deli sandwiches are danky and reasonably priced. lunch specials fill you up for cheap. friendly service, been around for quite some time, the reputation speaks for itself. 5 stars for quality, selection, and also for allowing me to exist
(5)JP C.
I head here before every tailgating event to buy the essentials. Best sausages around!
(5)Emily M.
Heavens to Mergatroid! Karl's is the one place I've found that reminds me of Felchneiders Meats (Oconomowoc - they are long gone). They were the butcher shop my parents used to buy all our meat from. Everything at Karl's is FRESH and their selection is awesome! I highly recommend their Door County Cherry chicken. It was probably the best chicken I've ever had. (Sorry, Grandma.) They also have a little German market with groceries. Overall : Karl's has a great selection of meats and other produce! Their customer service is top notch. I'll be going back again and again!
(5)Ron R.
I just got turned on to this place by our Yelp friends Brian and Joanna- this place is INCREDIBLE! Looks like they have a great selection of meats, but they also have a large variety of german groceries. Paprika chips, 6-7 different types of curry ketchup, pickled products etc. This time of year they also carry a very large selection of German Christmas candies and cookies. Including the liquor filled type! Yumm!
(5)S T.
Karl's had the most ridiculous lunch today. I went over and saw chicken fried steak so I would have that for $6.95. I didn't know what I was getting for this lunch. When the man handed me the box I thought this is kind of heavy as I walked to the cashier. I told the cashier that I have not opened it yet but could you humor me and weigh it, she said 2 pounds. She asked what it was and said open it I want to see it and I did, she said it smelled good. Inside the box was a chicken fried steak sandwich with sausage gravy, big pile of instant mash potatoes covered in sausage gravy, biscuits with sausage gravy and a cookie. See the pictures. The chicken fried steak was fresh and crispy on that light roll with toasted like crust. The mash was instant potatoes with sausage gravy but ok. The biscuit and sausage gravy was a nice touch and as always the great oatmeal cookie. Over all it was a lot of food and the thinking out side of the box that Karl's does keeps me coming back. I liked the quirky combination and still love Karl's. This will always be a permanent lunch spot.

Karl's is a great find in the western suburbs - its a small grocery/liquor store but you're really here for the meat counter. Things that really make them stand out: *Homemade deli meats & sausages. They have dozens & dozens of award plaques attesting to how good their stuff is. It's mostly German stuff - leberkase (hard to find elsewhere), mettwurst and beautiful Black Forest ham that reminded me of prosciutto. *Homemade summer sausages in at least a dozen varieties (garlic, salsa, pepper jack, etc) *Lots of German & Eastern European imported groceries *Really friendly staffers *Paprika potato chips from Germany. This is only the 2nd place in the area that I've found these delights (Old World Deli being the other) and I'm not ashamed to say I bought all they had. *At lunch, the deli counter will make you sandwiches for a very reasonable price *Whole beef tongues available in the freezer case. That's right. I'll certainly be back...when they restock the paprika potato chips.
(4)Rich D.
Karl's has some very good meat and sausage but I have had problems with the service. They used to have real butchers behind the counter but then they hired kids. I don't like it when they put the meat on the scale without placing paper down first. The service has gone down hill in recent years.
(3)Aimee T.
I'm not sure what happened to this place. We used to only come here for meat. Now it's mediocre. Prices got a bit high for what it is. They do have some speciality cuts of meat and some jerky and beef sausage which is nice but it's nothing overly special.
(2)Lanette F.
For a Memorial weekend family bbq my Mom treated us to a steak dinner. My husband and I decided to pick up 9 New York strips from Karls. We have stopped there on a few occasions with a good outcome. Unfortunately when we decided to spend $115 we were most disappointed. There was not one steak that was worth anywhere near $13.99/lb. Each one was grisly and tough. Rather embarrassing for my husband and myself that chose the place and spent my Mom's money. I hope it was a one time occurrence but won't be stopping again.
